Doleful Faces

I did this series of rather doleful faces a while ago. I love exploring the human face. I was experimenting with a larger format than I usually use and I threw out my portraiture training and let my eye have its way. I drew whatever caught my attention in no particular order and without much regard for over all structure. If an eye or nose or the lips seemed interesting, I’d spend some time on that area, only casually relating it to the rest of the face. I worked from photos and live models.  I expected distortion—these look very little like the real person. Consequently, some passages are pretty interesting, others don’t seem to belong on the same face. Our brains are wired to recognize a face as a cohesive whole. Hold you hand over half or part of these images and then move it around to see various parts. You’ll see how fractured they are. Sandra came in while I was working on some of these and remarked, “If you’re going for ugly, good job!” The human face is endlessly fascinating.
