Passignano

This is an acrylic painting from photos and sketches I made while passing through the Italian town of Passignano Sul Trasimeno in Umbria a few years ago. It was fun playing with the differences in patterns between the more rigid grids of tiles and bricks against the loosely impressionistic foliage patterns at the top. The contrasts of the orangey-red bricks with the purple-blues of the roof tiles and the yellowish spring greens of the central tree surround the more neutral gray of the campanile. For the most part, these colors are more exaggerated and saturated than the real colors of the dusty little town. But we were there on a bright, beautiful spring day and I wanted to express something of that mood.
